Getting an education is an integral part of becoming a successful adult. Some students struggle with learning in a classroom and need to be taught a different way. This is where tutoring comes in. One-on-one tutoring can be beneficial in many ways.
One-on-One Tutoring Is Less Distracting
A classroom can be an incredibly distracting environment for a child—particularly children who struggle with a lot of stimuli. Classrooms contain lectures and group work, along with decorations posted around the room.
A child can become extremely distracted during a lesson and may miss important information. This will lead to them not understanding the material and can snowball into feelings of frustration.
A one-on-one tutor can provide a quiet, relaxing environment where the student can focus on their studies.
Comfort Level
Sometimes, a child won’t ask questions in class because they are embarrassed or are afraid the other kids will think they are dumb. Not asking clarifying questions can be extremely detrimental, as it can lead to feelings of inadequacy in that subject.
With a one-on-one tutor, the child will feel more comfortable asking questions since no other students are around to make fun of them.
Pacing
Sometimes, a child needs to slow their learning down. This is often not possible in the traditional classroom, as the teacher needs to meet the majority’s needs. This can lead to feelings of frustration for the child and can lead to them giving up.
A one-on-one tutor works at a necessary speed for the student. They can move more slowly through topics of frustration so the student can work at the pace that is comfortable for them.
Personalization
One-on-one tutoring versus small group tutoring has the benefit of being able to personalize the lessons being given. With a small group, it is likely the students are struggling with a variety of subjects/topics, which often means at least one student isn’t getting all the help they need.
With one-on-one tutoring, the tutor can discuss what they are struggling with and can create lessons that tackle those topics. This allows the child to move forward on topics they are actually struggling with rather than generalized tutoring that may not be entirely beneficial.
One-on-One Tutoring Provides Flexibility
Another advantage over small group tutoring is the flexibility aspect. A one-on-one tutor can work around the child’s schedule. This is especially important as children get older and more involved in a lot of activities.
This flexibility also allows for children to not necessarily have to meet on a consistent schedule with their tutor. They can schedule time specifically when they need it. Being forced into tutoring sessions they don’t need is a great way to frustrate a child.
Deeper Learning Opportunities
Teachers have a lot of content to teach in a year. Thus, often, they can’t always go as in-depth into a topic as they would like. A one-on-one tutor gives a child an outlet to do discovery learning on new topics. Allowing children to explore topics of interest is a fantastic way to encourage lifelong learning.
Varied Learning Opportunities
Along with the ability to study a particular school topic in more depth, a one-on-one tutor can also be used to explore topics that are not necessarily studied in school. Perhaps a child is interested in coding, but it is not covered in school. A coding tutor could be hired to help the child learn.
